WILLIAMS I. R.

This page is dedicated to the memory of:

Weapons Engineering Artificer (Apprentice)

Ian Robert Williams

HMS Coventry

Paul B Sutherland (Ex CPOWEA (AD) (SM) D173071D)

Ian “Stumpy” Williams had been an apprentice at HMS Collingwood and joined HMS Coventry for the “Sea Training” phase of his apprenticeship. I knew him through his girlfriend at the time Lydia “Lil” Greedus. He regularly attended the “Collingwood Bop” nights where a number of us were on the committee of the JR’s Club (I was a Young Weapons Mechanic at the time). When Lil heard the news about Ian she was heartbroken (understandably). We travelled to Coventry Cathedral for the memorial service later that year. We felt it was the least we could do. Ian was a typical young apprentice with his whole life ahead of him. He will always be remembered whenever “The Coventry” is mentioned.

Family and friends are encouraged to contribute. We will add information to this memorial as we receive it.

If you have a photo, an anecdote, or simply to say you remember him, we will be very pleased to hear from you, so please contact the sama office at sama@sama82.org.uk
