HMS Glamorgan

Kelvin, from Portland in Dorset was born on 28th July 1954

He was killed on 12th June 1982, when HMS Glamorgan was damaged by a land launched Exocet missile.

“Mack” and I joined the Royal Navy as Artificer Apprentices in September 1971. We were in the same Class at HMS Fisgard for our first year. (Our Service numbers are less than 20 apart.)

I just wanted to say, he was a really lovely guy: always friendly and helpful. This was at a time we were both 17 year-olds learning how to be in the RN.

At the end of a year in Fisgard, Apprentices chose their future career path. I went to General Service as a Radio Artificer: “Mack” joined the Fleet Air Arm. That was the last time I saw him.

During the Falklands War, I was a member of the RN Group in the USA. Peculiarly, I was in Zimbabwe, attached to the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT), at the height of the war. Listening to the destruction of RN vessels, on the World Service, was dismaying -and not a little angering.

I didn’t learn about “Mack’s” death until some time later.

Over the years, I have frequently thought of him, with great sadness. RIP.

In 2022, as part of the 40^th Anniversary commemorations, geographical features were identified and named after the fallen of 1982. McCALLUM ROCK is a low rock islet east of Elephant Point, at the northwest end of Saunders Island, West Falkland.
