Ian Peter Hall

Peter, from Cowley in Oxfordshire was born on 1st March 1960.

He died when HMS Coventry was bombed and sunk whilst operating off the northern coast of West Falkland.

HMS Coventry sailed from Portsmouth on the 17th March 1982 for Exercise SPRINGTRAIN but was ordered south on the 2nd April. She carried out several operations around the Falkland Islands and on the 22nd May was tasked, along with HMS Broadsword, to operate as a ‘missile trap’ to the north of Pebble Island in defence of the San Carlos bridgehead. Having shot down several enemy aircraft, they were attacked and bombed on the 25th May. Three bombs exploded within HMS Coventry. Severely damaged, she capsized shortly afterwards and sank with the loss of nineteen lives.

Ian Hall rests with his comrades; their war grave is marked by a permanent memorial on Pebble Island, the nearest point of land. He is remembered.

I remember Nobby Hall as he used to serve on HMS London with me before he joined Coventry. He worked with me on the Sea Slug section. I was shocked to hear of his tragic death. He seemed a quiet lad but was always cheerful and he mixed well with everyone. When I see the photo of him on your remembrance page, it only seems like yesterday I saw him last.

I shared a mess at HMS Pembroke with Ian and one other guy who i remember as Phil. Can’t remember his surname.
The three of us were there together for about 1 year where we became very close friends. Phil, Me and my then Girlfriend, Alison, went to Ian’s 18th or maybe 21st Birthday party in Oxford. Alison is now my Wife.

After Pembroke we went off to our next ships but in 82, while in Gibraltar, Ian was there on Coventry, Me on Antrim and Phil shore based in Rooke. We all met up for a drink and to catch up……… I often think of Nobby, especially around this time of year. He was a top guy and still to this day it saddens me that we lost him back then.
