Malcolm was born on 6th July 1945. He served with the Coldstream Guards prior to joining the Special Air Service.
He died on the 19th May 1982, when the Sea King helicopter he was in crashed in the sea.

In 2022, as part of the 40th Anniversary commemorations, geographical features were identified and named after the fallen of 1982. ATKINSON ROCKS are a prominent rocks south of Blue Mountain on mainland East Falkland.
