John, born 6th June 1959, served with the Royal Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (REME) before joining the Special Air Service.
He died on 19th May 1982, when the Sea King helicopter carrying him crashed into the sea.

In 2022, as part of the 40th Anniversary commemorations, geographical features were identified and named after the fallen of 1982. NEWTON ISLET is a small tussac island in the Outer Triste Islands, East Falkland.
