Richard William Middlewick

Richard (Rick to all his friends) was born on the 10th of June 1961, the third son of Raymond and Cynthia Middlewick. He had two brothers, Peter (1954) and Andrew (1956), and a sister, Sarah (1964). Rick’s schooling was at the Brighton Hove and Sussex Grammar School between 1972 and 1977, where he is still remembered for his golfing ability. Representing his school in this sport, he went on to play at district junior level in the Army after he joined the Service in 1977.

Electing to specialize in catering, Rick attended the Army Catering Corps’ College and did well on the course. In 1982, following mobilization of the 5th Infantry Brigade for service in the South Atlantic, he was attached to the First Battalion of the Welsh Guards, travelling with them down to South Georgia in the QE2, and transferring there to SS Canberra. Following their landing in the Falkland Islands on 2nd June 1982, the unit transferred to the logistic ship RFA Sir Galahad for the journey around to Fitzroy on 7th June. On the following day the ship was attacked by Argentine Air Force A-4 Skyhawks, two bombs exploding in the tank deck. Richard was not among the survivors. The severely damaged ship was subsequently towed out to sea and sunk as a war grave.
