It’s over lads, the war is won
‘Tis time to walk away
Yet as we leave let’s not forget
Those brave souls who have to stay
June 14 in 82 Falklands war it ends,
It’s such a happy day
Some men cheer and jump with joy
While others kneel and pray
The years pass by it’s now been 42
And we still recall their names
Knocker, Smudge, Bill and Fred young men we have no more
Tonight we sit together remembering 82
We have a laugh and shed a tear tell jokes of times gone by
I hope we
A name most won’t remember
Of a place most won’t ever see
A conflict fought a lifetime ago
So that Islanders could live free
A land of mountains and valleys
of peat bogs and tussock grass
Sparse centers of population
The rest only sheep tend to pass
Scoured by Antarctic gales
All four seasons in one day
still locked inside my memory
But eight thousand miles away
This place saw the blooding of soldiers
some comrades remain “on patrol”
As always respect for the fallen
Who gave up their lives for the goal
A name
I packed my kit-bag and sailed away;
having been told that I’m going, only the previous day.
My home was a tanker, full of fuel and oil;
one of, war’s life-blood’s, along with death sweat and toil.
Adrenaline increased as Ascension was passed.
The News grew louder as peace went to half mast.
My Seakings were ready, when needed to fly.
The Falklands grew larger in the near darkening sky.
The war had begun, after words fell far short.
Bombs, bullets and death commenced, right from the start.
Carriers, Frigates and many Grey Ships,
( Dedicated to my shipmates and all who wear the South Atlantic medal with pride. But especially those 255 who are on eternal patrol)
April 2nd was the day
All the papers had to say
At 20 years old…..
..you had better learn to pray
The day before was no joke
I was just a normal bloke
Tomorrow would be…..
..The man in me, that awoke
The next 10 weeks would prove to be
Life changing times upon the Sea
We had to sail…..
..And set them Free
Swiftly, the Lady decreed
Retíraos, or find yourselves besieged
Far far away there are two islands, In 1982 they made the news.
They go by the name of the Falklands. But to many, where’s that? They did bemuse.
Are they off Scotland, Or in the North Sea.
In some far off land? No!! off Argentina they be.
Soldiers of the Argentine came to claim these isles, From Britain so very far away.
They didn’t count on many soldiers in their files, Coming South in ships the following May.
On the first of May the fighting began, Out at sea, it was so rough.
But we stood
Car packed and ready to go;
on leave so we thought but it wasn’t so;
I suppose it wasn’t just meant to be;
T Air Defence Battery was going to sea;
Across the south Atlantic Ocean;
Well at least that was the notion
One hundred and ten ships all packed to the top;
Commandoes, Paras, Guards, Ordinance, Artillery, the lot;
This is it lads. We’re going to war;
But nobody knew, what was in store
And all those mixed up feelings inside;
Were damn near impossible for us to hide.
We landed at a place called San …
We fought to free this place together
Standing side by side.
We battled winds and mighty storms
But still we did with pride.
We gave a lot on those long days
But some like you gave all.
You stood up to the guns and fire
Until you had to fall.
Your deeds and lives will stay with us
Who live but got away.
We will remember all of you
Until our dying day.
-John Porter¸ HMS Ambuscade
Up on First Mount Pebble Island, there’s a silent place, a lovely place, it’s where we went to remember,
Twas a windy place and the light was fading, but they knew we were there and why we were there
Shipmates present, come to remember shipmate’s past, sadly their watch now over, but still on patrol,
Words were spoken, and names were called, poppies were laid, and a toast was made, Up Spirits lads!
It’s sippers for us but gulpers for you, the rum flask was charged, was the least we could do
Each with our memories
A battered wooden jetty
Mist wrapped around its base
The landing craft set bow to beach
Looks oddly out of place.
The shoreline and the shallows
A mud and shingle mix
That tests your balance as you wade
And teaches you new tricks
The sheep shed by the dockside
Now full of troops and gear
The houses on the hillside
Stand Sturdy yet austere
The icy wind that billows
Blow cobwebs from the eyes
The mountains now revealed
Against the grey and golden skies
The track leads up the hill side
More dwellings in the lea
Troops in
That last walk with the fallen,
Before the shrouds are laid.
remembering friends faces,
and the sacrifice they made.
Standing tall beside you,
Laughing with a brew.
lodged within your memory,
but forever gone from view.
A marker on a headstone,
Not a story, just a name.
A fact of life for those of us,
Who played the soldier’s game.
we walk the ground with heroes,
but none of us will know.
the manner of our passing,
when the angels call to go.
A last walk with the fallen,
Tears lost among the rain.
Farewell
I got a bluey ……..
on a mountain.
All the way,…. from home.
And I wondered if …..
should I read it now….?
Or wait, until tomorrow ?
What words, may it contain ?
I fancied,….. I could smell..
In a lovers fair hand.
Your scent, ….upon the ink.
All the While
I’m sitting in a muddy hole
6,000 miles away,..
Where I viewed
A vista unsurpassed!
Where I saw stricken ships ……sink .
And wrapped …..within
a simple sheet ……of paper!
Within my pocket,
Lay……
My
Heart.
-Jim Love
Heavy air
Despondent Argies trudge past
Parents stare.
Dennis, bellows, “get to your safe building,
You’ve better protection there”
Noisy air
Officer barks and shoots over fleeing conscripts’ heads.
Parents feed cat, turn off
stove,
Hastily prepare.
Dangerous air
Family scurrying in bullet dodging fear.
Blood spots in the snow.
Special Forces, silently watching, giving hope.
Liberators are near.
Safe air
Hospital crowded with war weary locals.
Street fighting expected.
Medical staff prepare.
All staring at the air.
White helicopter lands.
Peace men walk by,
all hope…
Joyful air.
They’re here! We’re Free.
Town filled with long awaited
We went again far south from home,
Old friends and some we knew,
We walked the paths of years ago,
Our Band of Brothers few.
San Carlos , Goose Green then Ajax Bay,
We saw where comrades fell,
The rocky hills of Tumbledown,
Mount Longdon the Paras hell.
We shed our tears for boys long gone,
Our friends in arms indeed,
Who fought to free these Islands
From tyranny and greed.
We made new friends and told a yarn,
Of stories long ago,
We tried to drink the Island dry,
But the years have made
In honourable remembrance of our fallen comrades I have composed a Hymn. It is to the welsh tune Myfanwy and is entitled “Our Heroes fought across the oceans”
Our Heroes fought cross the Oceans
They died to set the Falklands Free
Their sacrifice we’ll ere remember
For old like us they’ll never be
Their youth, their life so full of promise
Their courage on the day they fell
The Sun gone down and, in the morning,
Our heroes stories we will tell
Remember them oh Great Britannia
Your sons they did not die in
Immoral annexation vile
Forced upon a distant isle.
Defenders sailed without delay,
Over the sea and far away.
Over the Sea and Far Away,
Though it’s forty years, it’s like yesterday,
And it meant much more than words can say,
Over the Sea and Far Away.
Sacrifices on the deep:
A liberation oath to keep.
By sea, by land and from the sky,
Oppressor’s wishes to deny.
Over the Sea and Far Away,
Knowing not what risks before them lay,
And they gave their all to save the day,
Over the Sea and Far
We came again to say goodbye, to friends who paid the price, who lie at peace far from their homes, they made the sacrifice.
Shipmates, comrades, one and all, heroes some would say, who gave their lives so long ago the ultimate price to pay.
We laid our wreaths, said words and prayers where battles took our mates, we took our tools and cleaning cloths and cleaned the heroes plates.
We left a stone or wooden cross or stood in silent prayer, for those that fell on land or sea and are no longer there.
The given day approaches,
The rituals will start,
Respect and dedication,
From all those taking part.
The blazer from the wardrobe,
Is pressed and brushed pristine,
The medals from their storage,
Are polished fit to gleam.
The slacks are ironed to knife edge,
And hung up set to go,
The shoes are bulled to mirrors,
So far they seem to glow.
The beret brushed and reshaped,
From where it’s been in store,
All ready for the moment,
when you step out of the door.
At marble stones they gather,
Engraved with names of old,
The veterans of
The soldier loves his mother,
But he treads a foreign field.
To keep his loved ones safe at home,
The ground he will not yield.
He does not love the battle,
Or the heartbreak that it leaves.
No life is taken lightly,
And within his soul he grieves.
He stands firm with his comrades,
And guards the precious land.
To give his nation freedom,
Is the reason for their stand.
Not all will come home safely,
Although it seems not fair.
They lay their lives down freely,
So listen to their prayer.
“we sacrificed for others,
So
Creeping. Dropping. Signalling. Stopping.
Gun bearing, black clothed strangers invade our town.
Creeping. Dropping. Signalling. Stopping.
Green beret wearing friends defend our homes.
Concern silenced parents stare at the radio
in hope of hearing hope.
Concern subdued youngsters drift from room to room
searching for distraction.
Cat sleeps on.
White flag carrying Matron Mum summoned to hospital.
Cautiously walking through recently silenced street battle zone.
Much work awaits our very own Florence.
Rattling, Squealing, Crunching, Grinding
Tanklike monsters growl along our gentle streets
Sky: noisily filled with unfamiliar craft
Heads: filled with unfamiliar feelings. Fear and
We went to Exercise Springtrain
Ships were ready for sun and rain
New ships would join, following operations on the Main
Coventry had been the first on Armilla, others had followed.
The exercise would end early, we would sail south,
Families Day and Easter leave were forgotten.
Preparing for war, securing for action, removing anything that could stop pump suction.
At Ascension we anchored for days
We took on stores and soaked up some rays.
The weather got worse as we sailed south, the World Service was our only news source.
May first was Black Buck
It’s the memories lads that we all hold so dear, of good times and bad times but mostly of cheer
We left you on watch, twas a sad thing to do, but rest assured shipmates we’re all thinking of you
A few head south now and again, back to our place in the wind and the rain
8 miles north of an Island we saw, where we all fought so hard till we could do no more
Years have passed since we parted our ways but our memories, they’re ours, and survived the waves
